NURSERY & PRIMARY SCHOOL WORKSHOPS

SCHOOLS SCIENCE PROGRAMME

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education is a key priority for Curriculum for Excellence. Through developments in learning and teaching and support for leadership, Curriculum for Excellence is enabling new and exciting opportunities to make school STEM education stimulating and relevant for all pupils.

Here at Silly Science it is our mission to inspire kids through science, so we have created a series of workshops that can be presented to kids at nurseries, primary schools, and those with special needs at LAS / SEN schools.

We want to help develop your child’s natural curiosity, imagination and creativity. In connection with the Curriculum for Excellence your pupils will learn about physics, chemistry and biology in ways that will help answer their many questions as they come across new wonders and experiences relating to forces, chemical changes or their own human senses.

We can visit your school or nursery and deliver science in one of two ways: Assembly Presentations that we can perform to the whole school and Interactive Workshops where we work with your pupils in small groups and one-to-one. See below for what we can offer your school or nursery.

ASSEMBLY PRESENTATIONS

Silly Science can visit your nursery or primary school and provide your pupils with one-hour interactive science shows. We can provide up to six shows a day, though we believe that your pupils will get the most out of our science days with a combination of both presentations and workshops.

Our shows are a visual feast and will involve some of our more exciting experiments that are not always possible in the classroom, with the kids and teachers getting involved in a little competition to end the show.

Our Silly Scientists have up to date Disclosure Scotland, we have £1 million Public Liability Insurance and a food safety hygiene certificate.

ASSEMBLY PRESENTATION PRICES - each workshop / assembly typically lasts one hour

£150 for one hour

£200 for two hours

£250 for three hours

£300 for four hours

Nursery School

PRE-SCHOOL / NURSERY 3-5YRS

ASSEMBLY PRESENTATIONS

1hr show with pupil and teacher involvement for around 50 pupils....the more the merrier! This assembly has been designed to appeal to nursery age and younger school pupils.

INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS

1hr interactive group work, typically for 20-35 pupils.

With the Scottish Governments focus on STEM subjects and the Curriculum for Excellence we have tailored our workshops to support the four key areas for development under the 'Sciences' framework - Planet Earth; Forces, Electricity & Waves; Biological Systems and Materials. Choose one of our workshops to support your coursework this term:

PLANET EARTH

We have two workshops available - Plants and Humans & Other Animals. These workshops will cover the life cycle of plants, pollination, food chains and the key roles both plants and animals play in the ecosystem.

FORCES, ELECTRICITY AND WAVES

We have two workshops available - Rockets and Electricity. The Rocket workshop will have the children building and launching their own rockets, while the Electricity workshop will give them the chance to play with a plasma ball.

BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS

We have one workshop available - Biological Systems, this workshop will cover the science of the digestive system - what happens to food from gums to bums, and the bloodstream, its circulation, the white and red blood cells...and if they are really red!

MATERIALS

We have two workshops available - States of Matter and Plasma & Polymers. These workshops will explore the five states of matter - solids, liquids gases, plasma and Bose-Einstein condensate and the behaviour of polymers and molecular structure.

Chemistry Students

PRIMARY SCHOOL 5-12YRS

ASSEMBLY PRESENTATIONS

1hr show with pupil & teacher involvement for anything up to around 300 pupils....the more the merrier! This assembly has been designed to appeal to older school pupils and to tie in with the Curriculum for Excellence.

LEARNING ASSISTED SCHOOLS / SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS 3-12YRS

A child's desire to learn and have fun is something they all have in common, so our shows and workshops are aimed at introducing kids of all ages and abilities to the world of science in a safe and familiar environment.  With this in mind, when attending an LAS / SEN school we are very aware how important it is to be versatile to each child's disposition. Working closely with teachers and helpers we can adapt our shows and workshops to suit the children's needs, ensuring they can engage as much as possible and, more importantly, enjoy themselves.

Our Silly Scientist Kirstie has vast experience working with children with special needs, having spent five years working at Penilee, St Mary’s & Mary Russell Primary Schools, and currently as Lead Coordinator at the Ko-Nekt Respite Centre, Ardrossan with kids ranging from 5-18 years of age.
